Canon: Code Geass
Character Background:
Being an exiled prince stuck into a country that's being forcibly taken by his own father due to speaking up to him about his mother's death and sister's disability sure didn't make a good childhood for him, as he ended up swearing to change this world for his sister. Of course, this plan was made when he was a child and an exiled prince, which meant he couldn't really do it and had to contend with a slightly average life. It's not until he met a green-haired witch (C.C.) that he gained the Power of Kings, the power to give people commands that couldn't be disobeyed by anyone.
It's from this point on that Lelouch realized that all he needs now is a loyal group to fight with him to start his master plan, which was why he took control of the terrorist cell that got him into meeting the witch in the first place via several 'miracles' that he performed with new power. When they accepted him as their new leader, comes the plans to liberate Japan from Britannia's control. From skirmishes with his own half-sister, saving another one of his half-sister to saving his old friend from execution, all under the guise of "Zero", which comes complete with an edgy mask and an obviously fabulous cape. There's also that bit where he had to foil someone from C.C's past from screwing his personal life over (except he partly failed since he's forced to mind-wipe Shirley, a close classmate of his). And also the bit where he found out about his friend Suzaku's mental trauma and gave him the vague order to "Live".
Of course, at one point, Euphemia (the half-sister he saved) decided to give Japan's name back to the citizens, which caused problems with Lelouch's plans. Naturally, he tried to rectify it but due to the fact that he's weak to Euphemia, he decided to work with, only for his power to malfunction at a bad timing which caused a joke to turn into an order. Said order? "Kill all Japanese", which caused a hell of a mess as she tried to do just that. Naturally Lelouch was forced to murder her, and decided to use this to crank his plan to the final phase of retaking Japan. Except that failed too since he heard the report that his sister was kidnapped and broke off from the climactic battle to save her, only to be shot by Suzaku and dragged to his father to have his memory wiped.
That's only season 1 by the way.
In season 2 he had definitely forgotten about everything he did in season 1 no thanks to his father's power, and in fact anything related to his sister had definitely been wiped out; replaced with that of his 'brother' Rolo, an assassin sent to monitor him in case he tried anything funny again. Unfortunately for Rolo and all the Britannian involved, a chance accident led to him remembering everything again in a weird deja vu that got him his memories back, no thanks to C.C. and Kallen's efforts. From then on, Zero continued on his campaign of destroying Britannia, with more successes and failures, actually more in terms of failures as Lelouch's mental state starts to degrade from all the mess-up pileups that he ended up stuck in. From having to see Shirley dying in front of him thanks to Rolo's overprotectiveness of him to having his own army betray him, it really was not a fun experience, especially when his command for Suzaku to "Live" ended up giving him the uncontrolled ability to survive anything no matter what, which included firing a nuke to the Tokyo Settlement and possibly killing his sister, to his major shock.
Add that to the fact that one of the major causes of his betrayal is his brother Schneizel, and this is probably going to end up a disaster, as he and Suzaku somehow repaired their broken friendship after killing off his dad, who was planning to meld all minds together with the Collective Unconscious for a happy ending with his sort of dead mom (who possessed one of the Knight of the Rounds), in addition to that both of them took over the now empty seat of Britannia's kingdom, and well... Let's just say Lelouch isn't really the best of emperors, and mounted a full on attack on his brother plus the terrorist faction that betrayed him.
That done, he then arranged for himself to get killed by Suzaku (who everyone thought was dead in the battle) who will then take up Zero's mantle and erase Suzaku's identity alongside Lelouch's life in order to turn the world's hatred to him.
And thus, Lelouch's life ended via a sword stab as his sister cried over his dead body.
Even with all this reduction this is still pretty bare bones compared to his actual history here!
Character personality:
Lelouch Lamperouge, at a glance seems to be just an ordinary person who just goes through life in a normal manner: going to school, working in the student council, as well as taking care of his sister are just some of the activities he undertook during the day. He is also well known for his reluctance in participating in most, if not all activities that involves physical work, as students have attested to the fact that Lelouch tends to skip P.E. class, and even the remedial classes for that very same subject, which can be justified by Lelouch's frail and weak body that could only handle a little bit of strenuous activity before giving out. In addition to that, he is seen to be quite average in his other studies, and can also occasionally be found skipping them in favor of other activities. Such activities include underground chess matches as well as several other forms of gambling to gain additional money for his daily living, or probably spending money to buy gifts for his little sister.
Presumably, he is also often roped into embarrassing situations and problems, no thanks to Milly Ashford, the student council president who has a penchant of creating bizarre events that sometimes involves getting a date from him, or any other distressing situations she felt like inflicting him with that day. He also tends to be quite amiable, albeit quite distant during conversations, in fact, he is quite well-read for a normal student since he keeps up with the news almost all the time. Lelouch is also one of the most popular student council member, no thanks to his looks and friendly personality, which makes it a hassle whenever he wants to get from one place to another.
Beneath the personality of Lelouch Lamperouge, though, lies his true identity of Lelouch vi Britannia, a man who wished to destroy the world and create it anew. Bearing a hatred against the very country that exiled him and left him for dead, Lelouch plans to destroy the very country itself and give freedom towards all the countries oppressed by Britannia. Of course, he can't do that without the proper power, which events in the first episode gladly provided him. From there, he began to concoct a plan to raze Britannia to the ground, a rebellion to end a prosperous, if oppressive reign.
Unlike his surface persona, Lelouch believes that the end justifies the mean, and that trying to do it the other way is a foolish move, which meant that almost everything is expendable to him, and even underhanded methods are fair game to him, as long as his goals are reached. This is further extrapolated by his actions with the Black Knight, the very organization he created in order to oppose Britannia. While he appears as the mysterious and ambitious Zero to them, he also managed to get these very members to trust him via a string of missions that were very reckless in nature, which they always managed to accomplish, no thanks to Zero's mysterious powers as well as tactical prowess. However, remember, that even if he trusts his life with them, in the end, they are all just pawns to him, disposable pieces, as they say.
Strangely though, Lelouch also cares for his comrades as well as loved ones, which led to him sometimes doing weirdly illogical actions that he himself would find foolish. In other words, Lelouch can also be seen as a hypocrite whenever people he knows comes to play. This conflict between ideals and actual actions defines Lelouch vi Britannia as a human being, as this is how he acts, no matter what his ideals are.
Another reason for his hatred of Britannia and the destruction of said country is so that he can create a better world for Nunnally, his beloved sister. In fact, Nunnally is his reason for living in this world he hated. He will protect her even if his death will result from it, he will destroy the world and create it anew, just for her. Such is the extent he will go for her, because of his love for her being that great.
Such is the amalgation of personalities that makes Lelouch Lamperouge a whole and flawed human.
Effects of memory loss:
He'll effectively act like his surface persona, since he didn't have all the mental baggage or trauma from his childhood or his life predating his death. Not to mention he'll be less manipulative than usual as he doesn't really knows he does that thing waaay too often. And also not obsess about his little sister as if she's the most important person in the world to him.
